The Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group is a non-profit community service organization whose primary mission is communication, education and service to our community. Our website at www.communityfest.org and our Community Meetings, held throughout the year, are forums for information, education, communication and socializing with friends and neighbors. Our ongoing community service programs include CommunityFest, our Senior Access Program and our Creek Habitat Program. We also host candidate forums in election years. In partnership with local business, schools and residents we are committed to working toward solutions to issues that affect us all. Our first project addressed maintenance and safety issues, and the Lucky store relocation at Plaza de Santa Teresa shopping center at Santa Teresa Boulevard and Cottle Road. We worked with the shopping center owner, city representatives and Lucky officials. STAction hosted our first community meeting in January 1999, attended by nearly 600 community members, to discuss shopping center issues and the Lucky relocation. After the first meeting, many community members joined STAction to continue working on the shopping center issues. Community ServiceWhen the Lucky store relocated, many residents of the senior housing complex near the former Luckys were stranded without grocery services. Beginning on February 16, 1999 and every Saturday since, members of STAction volunteer to drive seniors to the grocery store as part of our Senior Shoppers Shuttle program. Coyote Valley DevelopmentIn late February 1999, Calpine announced plans to build a 600-megawatt power plant a half mile from Santa Teresa neighborhood homes. And in early March, Cisco Systems announced plans to build a 400-acre campus in North Coyote Valley. Many members of the community asked STAction to research these proposals on behalf of neighborhood interests. Many well-attended meetings have been hosted by STAction since these projects were announced to share information gathered thus far. CommunityFestThe Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group organized and held the first annual CommunityFest in May 2000 as part of our efforts to unite the neighborhoods in the south-most part of San Jose. In spite of the light rain, the festival drew a large crowd and by all reports everyone had a wonderful time. In September 2001 we presented the second annual CommunityFest in cooperation with our City Council representative, Forrest Williams in a new location and a more weather-friendly time of year. We look forward to many more CommunityFests in the years to come. Don't miss the third annual CommunityFest on September 21, 2002 at George Page Park. Continuing CommitmentThe Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group continues to identify needs in our community and work toward solutions. Our anti-graffiti program is underway, as are plans for neighborhood clean-up days. In May, 2001 STAction organized our first Creek Clean-up project. STAction volunteers cleaned up significant stretches of both Coyote Creek and Canoas Creek. We hope to pursue plans for a community youth center to provide enjoyable and constructive activities for our young people. Our website provides a community service in the form of a widely accessible source of education on issues of importance to our area. Visit our website at www.SantaTeresaCitizen.org. Uniting NeighborsIn August 1999, STAction designated a Board of Directors, elected officers, and established a bank account. In September 1999, Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group was welcomed as a voting General Member in the countywide umbrella organization, United Neighborhoods of Santa Clara County. Our by-laws are on file. We continue to work toward our goal of uniting the neighborhoods from Blossom Valley to Coyote Valley and all of South San Jose. |
